"Life of Prayer": A 3-part series
Grace Church, Amherst, Massachusetts, in the Parish Hall
Wednesdays, October 1, 22, and 29
6:00 p.m. potluck supper (optional)
6:30-8:30 pm. evening program

It is one thing to hear someone tell us, again and again, Sunday after Sunday, "God loves you." It is quite another thing to discover that truth for ourselves in the depths of our being. That is the great promise of prayer: we don't have to settle for second-hand information about God. We can come to know God directly, in our own experience. This 3-week course will give us a chance to learn, practice, and discuss some basic forms of Christian prayer. We'll have room to experiment, ask questions, admit difficulties, and offer each other encouragement as we learn to engage more fully in conversation and communion with God.
The Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas, Priest Associate, taught courses on prayer at Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge for thirteen years and has led retreats around the country since 1986.
This series is free and open to the public.

Grace Church, Amherst, Massachusetts, in the Parish Hall
6:00 p.m. potluck supper (optional) in the Parish Hall
6:30-8:30 p.m. evening program

Is it morbid to think about dying? Or, considered from the light of the Resurrection, can facing mortality become a source of inspiration and hope? As St. Paul puts it, Christians are dying, and yet "behold -- we live" (2 Corinthians 6:9). Tonight's evening program is the first in a 3-week series on death and dying, in which we will consider the ways in which the death can become an ally in our journey to spiritual maturity in Christ. Tonight's program, co-led by the Rev. Margaret Bullitt-Jonas and the Rev. Ann Wood, offers an evening of reflection and conversation as we read passages from Our Greatest Gift, a book that the much-loved spiritual writer Henri Nouwen wrote shortly before his death. At 12 noon, Grace Church will ring its steep bell 350 times as part of the campaign to have 350 Episcopal churches across New England ring their bells 350 times during the last week of November. '350' is the number that represents safety. 350 parts per million is the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that our planet can sustain without causing cataclysmic and irreversible damage to life as we know it. The level of CO2 in our atmosphere is currently 385 and climbing. Episcopal churches in New England can sign up at www.350.org. Visit the home page of that site to learn about the science of climate change and why the number 350 is so important.
